1. How does food become the center of power between master and slaves?
- Food has become the center of power between master and slaves. The critical essay mentioned about the women slaves being the "food" to their masters' sexual appetite. A lot of black slaves were abused by not giving them the chance to eat. Most of the slaves were punished or tortured through food. The slaveholders were also able to control their slaves by "holding their stomachs."
2. How is food associated with a mother?
- Food is associated with a mother. Their children are fed with their mothers' love. Basically, babies survive because of breast milk. In the critical essay, black women were deprived of having the chance to take care of their babies. Instead, they were forced to feed the white mothers' babies.
